I’ve done many types of activities and sports throughout my student life, and it can be quite difficult to balance them all, along with school work and social life. In this article we have some personal experience and 3 tips for maintaining that balance without losing yourself in the process.
Of course, advice only works if it works day to day. So here’s how I was able to stay on top of doing dance competitions, running clubs, swimming practices, school plays, and homework- while maintaining a good grade, mental well-being, and enjoyment!
Tip number 1: Plan Ahead and Stay Organized
Making a plan, sticking to it, and staying organized is one of the most important keys to managing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Mark all of your important dates on a calendar, no matter if it is a competition, day out with friends/family, or a school assignment due date
No procrastinating
This tip has helped me over the years as it ensures that plans don’t clash, and everything is prepared + organized for any big event. When I had a very busy week with two different dance competitions coming up and an important test for science, I tried my best to stay organized and allocated different times for doing different things. I would try to finish my homework at school whenever I was able to, since my time after school was taken up by practice and other lessons. On days where I had more time after school, I would also use that time to finish other homework, or to study for the test. Staying organized like this was a major factor in helping me stay focused and avoid last-minute stress through one of the busiest weeks of the year.
Tip number 2: Don’t be afraid to say No
It’s tempting to say yes to every opportunity (club, event, hangout, etc.) that comes up, but doing this can lead to burnout. This is when it is important to learn to turn something down if you are already stretched thin.
If friends ask you to hangout but you know that your schedule at the time can’t take it, then it’s okay to prioritize what is most important
There was a weekend when I had both swim practice and rehearsals for school house concerts, not to mention orchestra rehearsal as well. Some friends asked me to hangout with them on that weekend, but I had to say no because I knew that I could not balance and have everything under control if I went. Although at first I had some fomo, I realized that I see them everyday at school, and there are always other times that I could hangout with them.
Tip number 3: Take breaks when needed
Taking breaks when needed plays a big role in improving mental health as a busy student. Pushing through nonstop can feel productive, but it isn’t always the most sustainable.
A break can help you recharge and return with more energy and focus!
I began to feel exhausted last semester from track and field practices, homework, and volunteer work. I kept pushing myself to stay on top of everything, but eventually, I realized I was burning out and not giving my best in any area. That’s when I decided to take a step back and rest when I needed it. I emailed my volunteering manager to skip volunteering here and there, which made a big difference. It helped me recharge, and by the end of the semester, I was able to perform better both on the track and in the classroom.
Summary
It’s certainly difficult to balance sports, school and life, but with staying organized, knowing your limits and taking breaks, the process becomes far easier. Try these tips and find what works best for you! Remember that taking care of yourself is just as important as staying busy.
